Utah is one of the states that issues specialty/vanity tags in the United States. You may usually apply for Utah vanity plates online, by mail, or in person. If the latter is the case, you'll need to complete and submit Form TC-817, Application For Vanity Plates, along with the required costs.

DMV allows you to fill out up to three applications with different combinations. If you want to know beforehand if the combination you want is available you may run a quick lookup.

DMV lets you choose the mix of letters and digits you want to see on your decals. However, there are some applicable restrictions you need to check out.

First of all, you have a character usage limitation. The restriction varies for each type of vehicle. It may range from four (motorcycles) to seven (standard ones).

Secondly, what we call characters are letters of the Latin alphabet and Arabic digits. You cannot utilize the letter “O”. Instead you may use the digit “0”.

You are not allowed to use any symbols or punctate marks (such as commas, hyphens, etc.).

Please, also note that state law doesn't allow the usage of offensive phrases and vulgar language printed on the decal.

Actually, no Utah license plate should contain offensive phrases. Any mix of letters or numbers that "may carry implications insulting to good taste and decency or that would be misleading" is prohibited under the law.

This regulation forbids the usage of phrases that are vulgar, insulting, profane, or obscene in general. You are not allowed to use the word "drugs" or "drug paraphernalia" in your sentence.

Your LP cannot have a sexual, genital, or body function reference or express scorn, mockery, or superiority toward a person's race, color, national origin, religion, physical status, etc. Threatening the public's welfare is also prohibited.

Furthermore, the planned character combination cannot be the same as a presently registered number tag. It cannot also have the conflict with a series or the letter/number combinations used on standard-issue ones.

Actually, you have to renew your registration along with your license plates every year.
